In his images of Bombay/Mumbai, Peter Bialobrzeski condenses the intense impressions of a city caught between local traditions and cultures and the uninhibited forces of globalization and neoliberalism.

Writes Ranjit Hoskote in his essay: „The rhythm of Bialobrzeski’s photographs oscillates between the emphatic vertical momentum of towers that vacuum-seal their residents into a guarded sanctuary, and the flattening and erasure of the horizontal settlement. In Bialobrzeski’s Bombay/Mumbai, the cityscape is dominated by the brash challenges it offers the sky (…) The photographer returns, constantly, to the depiction of a particular paradox that defines Bombay/Mumbai: the claustrophobic panorama.“

Background information

"The urban centers in Peter BIALOBRZESKI's pictures flow together into a single fictional city more real than reality, for cities are no longer singular places but nodes in the information network, 'not a place but a process,'' as Manuel Castells wrote in in 'The Rise of Network Society.' The megacities of Southeast Asia exist in these images as a fantasy that makes no solid distinctions between Shanghai, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. Peter Bialobrzeski's photographs put a radiant, glamorous face on globalization and the invisible and powerful network that shapes our surroundings -- and virtually runs our lives." Italian description

Visione?
